Indonesian female workers
Indonesian female workers
From Gatra
I am writing about the situation of Indonesian female workers
in Malaysia. An agent supplied Indonesian female workers to
Malaysia and made a huge profit from the business. At the end of
December 1994 rumors were rife that an illegal agent brought
Indonesian female workers into Malaysia. The agent forced them to
become prostitutes. And one of them gave birth to a baby.
According to the worker, the agent wanted to sell the baby, which
is a disgrace to the Indonesian people, particularly women. So
the culprit must be punished.
Minister of Women's Roles Mien Sugandhi suggested that rapists
be displayed on TV. I suggest that the illegal agent who handled
the workers improperly be also displayed on television.
Earlier it was rumored that a prostitute who was said to be
Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus positive was brought to Malaysia.
The woman, who was believed to have come from Bandarlampung,
worked as a housemaid. Stories of this case continue to be
published in the Malaysian media.
Taking all the above cases into account, I would like to
advise potential female workers to follow legal procedures (in
this case the Department of Manpower) if they want to work
abroad. I recall what happened to the Indonesian female workers
in Japan. They were forced to do indecent work. Then the
Indonesian Embassy in Japan sent them home.
