Indonesian Embassy Kuala Lumpur oversees handling of Indonesian nationals following Perak shipwreck

Kuala Lumpur - The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Kuala Lumpur continues to oversee the handling of Indonesian nationals affected by a shipwreck in Perak, Malaysia. In a statement issued on Tuesday, 26 May, the embassy said it has been coordinating closely with Malaysian authorities since receiving information about the incident on 11 May 2026. Coordination has been carried out with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), IPK Perak, IPD Manjung, Public Health Department (JKM), and Teluk Intan Hospital. These steps are being taken to ensure comprehensive handling, from consular access and victim identification to humanitarian protection for affected Indonesian nationals. The embassy has also gained access to meet the 18 surviving Indonesian nationals. The meetings were conducted to verify identities, gather detailed information, and confirm the condition of the survivors. Initial identification shows the survivors hail from Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, Lampung, Banten, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Southeast Sulawesi. Meanwhile, five Indonesian nationals are undergoing further investigation by PDRM over alleged involvement in illegal migrant trafficking. The embassy confirmed all survivors are in good health. Concurrently, coordination with Teluk Intan Hospital indicates 16 Indonesian nationals have died in the incident. To expedite victim identification, the embassy is collaborating with Indonesian police to trace families of the deceased and collect DNA samples. The samples are being taken from families of Indonesian nationals suspected to be related to the deceased. ‘The Indonesian government, through the Kuala Lumpur embassy, is closely monitoring the case’s developments, coordinating with all relevant parties in Malaysia and Indonesia, and maintaining active communication with the victims’ families,’ the embassy stated.
