Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur Repatriates 198 Migrant Workers

The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has repatriated 198 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) from various immigration depots across Peninsular Malaysia. The Coordinator of Protocol and Consular Functions at the embassy, Octavin Dewi Zulaicha (Vivin), stated that the majority of those returned were from vulnerable groups, including women, children, and individuals who had been in the depots for an extended period. The group was flown back to two debarkation points: Medan and Jakarta. The repatriation took place on Thursday (23/7) using commercial flights, with the workers originating from provinces including Aceh, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara. The embassy described the move as a crucial step in providing humanitarian protection and certainty for the migrant workers. The process was carried out through close coordination with local authorities, specifically the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), as well as relevant agencies in Indonesia, including the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI), to ensure a smooth repatriation and subsequent handling upon arrival. This marks the fifth repatriation wave in 2026, following earlier operations in February, March, April, and June. Since the beginning of 2026, the embassy has facilitated the return of 696 Indonesian citizens from Malaysian immigration detention depots. Vivin noted that the effort reflects the embassy’s consistency in ensuring the protection and fulfilment of rights for Indonesian citizens, particularly those in vulnerable situations. The issues faced by most of the repatriated workers were related to immigration violations, such as overstaying, along with some criminal cases. The embassy emphasised its balanced approach of respecting local laws while fulfilling the basic rights of Indonesian nationals. It also urged all Indonesian citizens abroad to always comply with the laws and regulations of the host country and to understand their rights and obligations to prevent future legal problems. The embassy remains committed to providing optimal protection for Indonesian citizens and strengthening prevention efforts through increased awareness of safe and responsible migration.
