Indonesian Embassy in Iran Initiates Evacuation of Indonesian Citizens Back to Indonesia
Tehran — The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Iran has received orders to evacuate Indonesian citizens from the country in response to ongoing attacks by Zionist Israel and its ally, the United States, against Iran, referred to as the Land of the Mullahs. The Indonesian Ambassador in Tehran, Roy Sumirat, told Republika from Jakarta that the evacuation process is voluntary. ‘Yes (Indonesian citizens have begun to be evacuated). And for this evacuation, our system is voluntary,’ he said on Wednesday (4 April 2026) in the early hours. In other words, Indonesians in Iran who wish to return to the homeland will be repatriated. ‘We will assist the evacuation,’ he added. Those who prefer to remain in Iran will not be forced to return; however, the embassy reminds them to continue communicating to ensure safety. When asked about whether the evacuation is proceeding, Roy said such technical matters fall under the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) in Jakarta. He emphasised that the authority to declare evacuation lies with the government in Jakarta. Last week, Roy said there were 329 Indonesians ‘trapped’ in a difficult situation in Iran, mostly students. The Indonesians are spread across major cities such as Qom and Tehran. Both cities have also been targets of attacks and aggression by Israel and the United States. Since Saturday (28 February 2026), joint forces from the two countries have bombarded Iran, contributing to open warfare in the Gulf region.
