Indonesian DPR Member Urges More Tangible, Community-Focused Human Rights Programme in Banten
At a meeting with the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Banten Province, he stressed that human rights issues are part of the national priority agenda that must be pursued seriously. Marinus reminded of the importance of implementation in line with the government’s policy direction. ‘This human rights issue is part of the President Prabowo’s Asta Cita. Therefore, its implementation must be real and felt by the public, not just a formal report,’ Marinus said in a written statement on Friday, 22 May 2026. He also highlighted the outreach programme for 65 UMKM actors presented by the Kanwil KemenHAM Banten. According to him, the programme’s effectiveness needs to be reviewed given that Banten is known as an industrial area with a dynamic labour market quite complex. Marinus believes that protections for workers and workers’ rights should receive greater attention in strengthening human rights in the region. ‘Banten is an industrial region. There are many labour and workers’ rights issues that must be given attention. Therefore, the outreach programme to UMKM needs to be reviewed to gauge its impact on strengthening human rights in the region,’ he said. In addition, Marinus pushed for the Kanwil HAM to be involved from the stage of drafting the vision and mission of the regional head candidates so that the policies born later are more in line with human rights values. ‘Going forward, a mechanism should be considered so that the Kanwil HAM can be involved from the process of drafting the vision and mission of the regional head candidates. That way, when elected, their work programmes will already align with human rights values,’ he asserted.
