Indonesian Diaspora in Finland and Estonia Celebrate 81st Independence Day in Helsinki
A warm and convivial atmosphere enveloped the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Helsinki on Saturday (13/6/2026) as around 200 Indonesian citizens and diaspora members gathered to enliven the opening of the 81st Indonesian Independence Day celebrations.
Indonesian Ambassador to Finland and Estonia, Ibnu Wahyutomo, stressed in his remarks that the independence day commemoration is not merely ceremonial, but a crucial momentum to cultivate nationalism abroad. “This series of activities serves as a platform to strengthen bonds, not only among residents in Helsinki and its surroundings, but also with diaspora from various cities in Finland and Estonia,” said Ambassador Ibnu.
The festivities began with a ‘Sepeda Gembira’ (Joyful Cycling) event, where 20 cyclists traversed a 10-kilometre route around Laajalahti Bay. Starting and finishing at the KBRI Helsinki, participants were treated to Finland’s pristine natural scenery, from forested areas to refreshing coastal views.
Equally lively, the embassy grounds were transformed into an arena for traditional games. Laughter erupted as adult participants took part in a cheerful marching drill competition (PBB Ceria) and a biscuit-eating race where contestants had to eat biscuits placed on their faces without using their hands. Meanwhile, diaspora children enthusiastically joined marble-carrying races and a game of inserting miniature flags into bottles, an effort to introduce the quintessential 17th of August competitive spirit from an early age.
The event, titled ‘Bazaar Merdeka’, also served as a nostalgic haven for lovers of Indonesian cuisine. Authentic dishes such as nasi bakar, rendang, dendeng balado, bakso, and sate lilit were quickly snapped up by visitors. Beyond ready-to-eat meals, the bazaar also offered Indonesian food ingredients, batik fabrics, and handmade accessories.
Although a light drizzle fell over Helsinki, the participants’ spirits remained undampened. The atmosphere grew even more vibrant when music was played and the entire diaspora community joined in communal dances. Accompanied by songs like Poco-Poco, Maumere, Tabola Bale, and Pica Pica, the event united attendees who had travelled from the Finnish cities of Tampere, Turku, and Kajaani, as well as those who crossed over from Estonia.
The series of activities commemorating the 81st Independence Day within the KBRI Helsinki accreditation area will continue with various sports competitions throughout June and July, culminating in a solemn flag-raising ceremony on 17 August.
