Indonesian Delegation to Iran Pays Respects to Khamenei and Strengthens Bilateral Ties

The visit demonstrates the close relationship between the two countries. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani are visiting Iran to pay their respects to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and to strengthen bilateral relations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated in Jakarta on Thursday that the visit was made at the invitation of the Iranian Government to honour the late Supreme Leader. In addition to paying final respects, with the funeral scheduled for Friday local time, the Indonesian delegation is also set to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The bilateral meeting between the foreign ministers aims to further reinforce Indonesia-Iran relations and deepen cooperation across various priority sectors. It is hoped the meeting will accelerate coordination between the two nations in addressing regional and global challenges. Mewengkang confirmed that representatives from Indonesian Islamic organisations, namely Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, are also part of the delegation. Regarding flight logistics to Iran, the Foreign Ministry is continuously coordinating with Iranian authorities and the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran to ensure the delegation’s departure and arrival proceed according to schedule. The visit underscores the strong ties between the two countries and affirms the consistency of Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy.
