Indonesian coup unlikely, PM says
SINGAPORE (AP): A coup in Indonesia is unlikely, Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Sunday, commenting on rumors that Indonesian generals may be plotting such a move.
"I got a sense that the President is firmly in control of the situation -- he is very confident," said Goh, who visited Indonesia's new president Abdurrahman Wahid last week.
"I don't think there will be a coup, because he is that confident," Goh said in a Television Corporation of Singapore news report on Sunday.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke last week sternly warned Indonesia's generals not to challenge Abdurrahman's authority.
The warning came amid speculation that some top generals, angered by efforts to prosecute them for human rights abuses, may be planning to move against the President.
