The Indonesian Corruption Commission (KPK) has confirmed it is monitoring the issue surrounding East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud’s purchase of an official vehicle valued at 8.5 billion rupiah, which has generated considerable public discussion.

“It has indeed been quite prominent on social media, and we are also following the news coverage,” said KPK spokesman Budi Prasetyo in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

In light of this, Budi stated that the KPK has reminded Rudy Mas’ud that regional expenditure must be based on careful planning and genuine need. According to Budi, the KPK issued this reminder because the goods and services procurement sector is frequently an area vulnerable to corruption offences.

“Goods and services procurement is often an area with potential for corruption offences. Conditioning, irregularities, price inflation, and specification downgrades must all be examined carefully to ensure all mechanisms are being properly implemented,” he said.

Additionally, he stated that the KPK has cautioned against situations where the actual need is for item A, but the provincial government then spends its budget on item B.

Previously, Rudy Mas’ud attracted public scrutiny for stating that the 8.5 billion rupiah official vehicle purchase was undertaken to preserve East Kalimantan’s dignity. He also stated that the vehicle purchase, with its specifications, complies with the Interior Ministry Regulation (Permendagri).

On a separate occasion, Golkar Party Secretary-General Muhammad Sarmuji acknowledged that the party had already cautioned Rudy Mas’ud, as a party member, regarding his statement about the official vehicle. Sarmuji stated that Golkar has urged the East Kalimantan Governor to listen more closely to public opinion while pursuing efficiency.
