Indonesian Consulate in Shanghai Hosts 'Pesta Rakyat' to Celebrate 81st Independence Day

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Shanghai held traditional Independence Day competitions called “People’s Party” to enliven the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

The various competitions included cracker-eating contests, tug-of-war, quizzes, and a game of threading string into bottles, which took place on Saturday (8/8).

“Even though we are far from our homeland, we must maintain the spirit of independence. Let us continue to preserve unity, support one another, and spread the spirit of mutual cooperation,” said the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Shanghai, Berlianto Situngkir, in a written statement received by ANTARA in Beijing on Tuesday.

The “People’s Party” was attended by hundreds of Indonesian citizens living in Shanghai and its surrounding areas. The community was enthusiastic as various prizes were available for competition winners.

The series of events commemorating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day in Shanghai will continue with a red-and-white flag-raising ceremony on 17 August 2026, which will be attended by the Indonesian community in Shanghai and its surroundings.

The working area of KJRI Shanghai covers the city of Shanghai, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Anhui Province—also known as the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region—and Jiangxi Province, all located in eastern China.

Within this working area, there are approximately 800 Indonesian citizens, most of whom are students, businesspeople, and expatriates.
