Bekasi, Kompas.com – Indonesian-made coated steel products have secured a compliance certificate under the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This achievement is significant because Indonesian-coated steel products can now access markets in the United States and Europe with 100 percent locally sourced inputs. Exports were conducted by PT Tata Metal Lestari (TML). The products exported include aluminium-zinc coated steel (BJLAS) branded Nexalume, zinc-coated steel (BJLS) Nexium, and colour-coated steel Nexcolor. The products are the result of upstream and downstream industry collaboration between PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk and PT Tata Metal Lestari. The value is around Rp 63.72 billion, based on an exchange rate of Rp 17,700 per US dollar. The export shipment was undertaken from Tata Metal Lestari’s production facility in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, on Friday (22 May 2026). “With this, we want to show that the national industry still has export opportunities in the face of the US Section 232 tariff policy and anti-circumvention measures, as well as the dynamics of the global economy,” he said at the export ceremony. Tata Metal Lestari explained that all exported products use substrate steel produced through the melt‑and‑pour process in Indonesia, supplied by Krakatau Steel. This export is strategic because for the first time Indonesian coated steel products have obtained CBAM pre-verification from the EU. “We prove that using steel that is 100 percent Indonesian from Krakatau Steel we can penetrate these markets in Europe and the US directly,” he said. The figure is lower than the industry default value for Indonesian steel at 8.2 tCO2 per tonne of product. Stephanus described the achievement of CBAM pre-verification as an important moment for the transformation of the national steel industry towards a low-carbon industry.
