Indonesian Citizen Killed by Fellow Citizen in Japan; Ministry of Foreign Affairs Reveals Victim was a Migrant Worker
The spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, stated that the government is currently investigating the stabbing of an Indonesian woman by an Indonesian man in Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan. She added that the victim, identified as 21-year-old Sri Rahayu, was an Indonesian migrant worker (PMI).
Yvonne noted that the victim was rushed to a local hospital but was subsequently pronounced dead. According to information obtained by the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI), the victim received medical attention before passing away.
A Japanese police officer and another Indonesian citizen were also injured during the incident. “In this event, it was reported that a Japanese police officer and another Indonesian citizen sustained injuries at the scene. KBRI Tokyo has communicated with the Chitose Police and the parties responsible for the victim as a migrant worker. The perpetrator has since been arrested and is being detained by the Chitose Police,” Yvonne said.
Recent developments in the case suggest that the victim and the perpetrator may have known each other. The incident has drawn significant public attention, not only because it involves two Indonesian nationals in Japan but also because the arrest process led to an injury sustained by a Japanese police officer during the attempt to subdue the suspect.
The tragic event occurred on Thursday night, 4 June 2026, at approximately 21:10 local time. Local police identified the victim as Sri Rahayu, a 21-year-old residing in the Fuji 3-chome area of Chitose, Hokkaido. The perpetrator has been identified as 27-year-old Mahmudi Agung Laksana Aji, a part-time worker residing in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
In the preliminary investigation, Japanese police found indications that the victim and the suspect had a relationship or were at least acquainted prior to the fatal stabbing. However, authorities are still investigating the nature of their relationship and have yet to conclude the motive behind the attack.
