Indonesian Cinema Attendance Drops 16.7 Per Cent in First Half of 2026
The number of cinema-goers in Indonesia experienced a 16.7 per cent decrease in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year. Nevertheless, the performance of local films remained strong, dominating the list of highest-grossing films in the domestic market.
From January to June 2026, Indonesian cinemas recorded a total of 53.77 million viewers, according to Cinepoint box office data reported by Screen Daily. This figure generated an estimated box office revenue of approximately Rp2.48 trillion, with an average ticket price of Rp46,056.
The five films with the highest viewership during this period were all domestic productions. The top position was held by ‘Danur: The Last Chapter’, which amassed 3.62 million viewers. This supernatural horror film is the fourth instalment in the popular Danur franchise, reuniting director Awi Suryadi with actress Prilly Latuconsina.
In second place was the horror-comedy ‘Ghost In The Cell’, directed by Joko Anwar, which earned 3.38 million viewers. The film previously had its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) in February 2026 before its official Indonesian theatrical release on 16 April.
Following these were the family drama ‘Tunggu Aku Sukses Nanti’, directed by Naya Anindita, with 3 million viewers; the horror film ‘Alas Roban’ by Hadrah Daeng Ratu, with 2.43 million viewers; and the horror-comedy ‘Sekawan Limo 2: Gunung Klawih’ by Bayu Skak, with 2.06 million viewers.
Two of the top films, ‘Danur: The Last Chapter’ and ‘Tunggu Aku Sukses Nanti’, were released on 18 March 2026, coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr holiday period. In Indonesia, the Eid season is one of the most profitable periods due to high public interest in cinema.
Additionally, three other local films released during the Eid period performed well: the horror film ‘Suzzanna: Santet Dosa di Atas Dosa’ by Azhar Kinoi Lubis reached 1.53 million viewers, the drama ‘Na Willa’ by Ryan Adriandhy garnered 1.4 million viewers, and the family drama ‘Senin Harga Naik’ by Dinna Jasanti collected 1.18 million viewers.
As Eid al-Fitr celebrations took place in March this year, March became the month with the highest viewership in the first half of 2026, reaching 11.84 million viewers. April followed as the second busiest month with 9.92 million viewers, driven largely by the release of ‘Ghost In The Cell’.
Despite the overall decline in attendance, Indonesian films maintained their dominance in the first half of 2026. Local productions contributed nearly 72 per cent of total cinema revenue, even though the number of local films released represented only about one-third of the total films screened.
