JAKARTA (JP): An Indonesian education professor, Moegiady, has been appointed director for the Central Asia region of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Antara reported yesterday.
Moegiady, 53, is currently serving as education and cultural attache at the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, Australia.
His secretary, Tely Damanik, confirmed the appointment and said that Moegiady will leave for Islamabad, the UNESCO regional office, on Dec. 1 to begin his task.
He will first fly to Jakarta to report on the new assignment to Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro.
Moegiady's previous experience includes staff lecturer of the Teachers Training Institute in Bandung, and secretary of the National Education Advisory Board.
He beat three other candidates, Japan, China and South Korea, for the post.
Moegiady becomes the second Indonesia appointed as senior official to the UN education agency. The first one was Makagiansar, who is now an aide to State Minister of Research and Technology B.J. Habibie.
"Moegiady plans to promote formal education and a special program for the improvement of women's roles, eradication of illiteracy and regional cooperation in the education and technology fields," Antara news agency quoted Damanik as saying when asked on his program in his new post. (rms)
