Indonesian Ambassador Attends Final Respects for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran

Indonesia’s Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, along with a number of Indonesian citizens, attended a ceremony to pay their respects to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran on Saturday (4/7). The presence marked the start of a lengthy funeral procession for the former Supreme Leader of Iran. The attendance of the ambassador, who is familiarly known as Roy, was confirmed through a video posted on the official social media account of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, @indonesiaintehran. In the footage, the Indonesian Ambassador was seen dressed entirely in black as a sign of condolence and official respect from the Indonesian government. The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran explained that the Ambassador was not alone, but was accompanied by a number of Indonesian citizens residing in Iran to participate in the communal prayers. ‘The Indonesian Ambassador to Tehran along with a number of Indonesian citizens in Iran attended the ceremony of respect and communal prayer for the late His Eminence Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, which was held at the Grand Mosalla Tehran,’ read the official statement in the embassy’s post. Video footage from the location showed thousands of mourners filling the mosque complex. The crowd in attendance was seen carrying the Iranian national flag and photographs of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a final tribute to the central figure of the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died following an airstrike launched by Israel and the United States in Tehran at the end of February. The incident triggered a major escalation in the form of a retaliatory attack from Iran, which developed into an armed conflict over the past several months. The uncertain security situation had caused the funeral procession to be postponed several times. However, following a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran and the start of negotiations to end the war, the funeral rites could finally be officially carried out. The series of tributes to Khamenei is scheduled to last for six days, starting on 4 July and culminating on 9 July 2026. Beyond being a period of mourning, the ceremony is considered to be laden with symbolic messages. The chosen recitations of holy verses during the procession are seen as an affirmation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s direction of struggle, as well as a diplomatic message from Tehran to international delegations regarding the country’s position amid regional security dynamics.
