REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI) on Wednesday (8 April 2026) sent off six of its volunteers and activists in the second batch to join the 2026 Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) mission. The six volunteers include Maimon Herawati, Muhammad Husein, Chiki Fawzi, Shafawi, Adhin, and Gandi.

They will join other GSF participants in Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona is one of four assembly points for thousands of GSF volunteers and activists for this year’s humanitarian sailing mission to breach the Gaza blockade.

The first batch of GPCI volunteers departed on Monday (6 April 2026) after flying out activist Wanda Hamidah. “Our departure is proof that we will not stop, that the wave of the Global Sumud Flotilla civil movement will continue as long as the occupation persists, as long as the blockade is imposed by Zionist Israel on the Palestinian people in Gaza,” said Husein at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Wednesday (8 April 2026).

Husein is a member of the GPCI Advisory Board and CEO of International Networking for Humanitarian (INH), one of Indonesia’s largest humanitarian philanthropies. Husein hopes that the active participation of GPCI volunteers and activists in the humanitarian mission to breach the Gaza blockade will always receive support from the public.

“We invite the Indonesian public to join in praying for us, to raise their voices, to protect us through prayers and supportive narratives, to back the Global Sumud Flotilla mission,” said Husein.

Given that the Global Sumud Flotilla sailing mission remains a dangerous humanitarian action, Husein also requested that the Indonesian government consistently provide support and protection.

“We also ask the government to always advocate for us, to provide support and protection to us as citizens taking part in this humanitarian mission,” said Husein.

“The Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission is not easy and is quite dangerous, so we hope the government also provides support and protection,” Husein added.

GPCI Advisory Board Coordinator Maimon Herawati explained that the departure of GPCI volunteers and activists will continue until the end of this month. She said the staggered departures from Indonesia are intentional, as the 2026 Global Sumud Flotilla sailing is also conducted in phases and spread across several countries.

“There are departures from Barcelona, from Italy, and Greece, and also in Turkey,” said Maimon. Maimon is the President Director of Smart 171 and a member of the 2026 Global Sumud Flotilla Steering Committee.

She added that, based on registrations with GPCI, around 150 volunteers and participants have signed up to take part in the Global Sumud Flotilla.

At the international level, it is estimated that more than a thousand volunteers and activists from around 100 countries will join this year’s Global Sumud Flotilla mission. Most participants are prioritised from medical and nursing backgrounds, as well as development experts. Maimon said the sailing from Barcelona will begin on 12 April, while in Italy and Greece, the humanitarian ships will set sail simultaneously in mid-April, followed from Istanbul, Turkey on 2 May 2026.

In addition to the Mediterranean Sea route, this year’s Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian action will also proceed via a land convoy from Libya to Egypt before heading to the Rafah border. The Mediterranean sailing to breach Gaza, as well as the land convoy conducted by the Global Sumud Flotilla, share the same mission to deliver humanitarian aid, such as food and clean water, medicines, baby supplies, and women’s needs.

“Preparations have been underway for the past two months. We hope that this year’s Global Sumud Flotilla mission succeeds in breaching the Gaza blockade to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza, who remain under blockade by the Zionist Israeli regime to this day,” said Maimon.
