Indonesia is the world’s only nation implementing a 50% biodiesel blend (B50), according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Eniya Listiani Dewi confirmed the government is accelerating road tests across six sectors—including automotive, agricultural machinery, maritime transport, mining equipment, railways, and power generation—to ensure infrastructure readiness and engine compatibility.

Mandatory implementation of B50 is set to commence in July 2026, up from the current B40 programme. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has accepted the biodiesel as a tool to reduce emissions. The policy is projected to save Rp157.28 trillion in foreign exchange, create over 2.2 million jobs, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 46.72 million tonnes of CO2 in 2026.

As of mid-April 2026, national biodiesel distribution has reached 3.90 million kilolitres, approximately 24.9% of the annual allocation of 15.65 million kilolitres. Technical specifications for B50 have been enhanced to maintain engine performance, including a maximum water content of 300 ppm and monoglycerides capped at 0.47% by mass. Oxidation stability has been increased to a minimum of 900 minutes to ensure fuel quality during storage and distribution.

Testing in the automotive sector is expected to conclude by June 2026, with other strategic sectors such as mining equipment and railways to be completed by year-end. Initial results indicate reliable and safe performance, strengthening national energy independence.
