Jakarta — The Indonesian Government will not support or co-sponsor UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which was submitted by Bahrain on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to strongly condemn Iranian attacks against Gulf states.

“Indonesia is not a co-sponsor of UN Security Council Resolution 2817,” said Indonesian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nabyl A. Mulachela during a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday.

Nabyl stated that Indonesia believes conflict resolution efforts must be conducted peacefully through diplomatic channels, whilst developing balanced and inclusive aspects.

“When considering how to resolve this issue, we must not only pay attention to inclusivity in the process, but also to balance,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

Additionally, Nabyl noted that Indonesia is urging the United States and Israel to cease attacks on Iran, whilst also urging Iran to stop its attacks against Middle Eastern countries, simultaneously seeking to ensure that a solution is found peacefully.

The 15-member UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2817 on 11 March 2026 with 13 votes in favour, no votes against, and two abstentions from Russia and China.

UN Security Council member states supporting the resolution were France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Liberia, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia.

In the resolution, the UN Security Council strongly condemns Iranian attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, and reaffirms strong support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of these nations.

The United States and Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran on 28 February, causing damage and civilian casualties. They initially claimed the attacks were to counter threats from Iran’s nuclear programme, but later clarified that the strikes were intended to achieve a change of power in Iran.

Iran responded by attacking Israeli territory and American military facilities in the Middle East.
