Indonesia, Uruguay seek stronger agricultural ties
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Uruguay has offered to strengthen bilateral agricultural ties with Indonesia, focusing on capacity-building programs for Indonesian farmers, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Monday.
“Indonesia and Uruguay have great potential to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, as well as concrete collaboration in the farming sector,” Hartarto said following a meeting in Jakarta with Uruguay’s Deputy Foreign Minister Valeria Csukasi and Deputy Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries Matías Carámbula.
Hartarto highlighted the offer’s strategic value, noting Uruguay’s position as a major producer and exporter of beef and dairy products in South America.
Under the proposed program, Uruguay aims to share technical expertise and agricultural practices with Indonesian farmers to boost domestic production.
The initiative aims to enhance food security and deepen economic resilience for both nations amid global geopolitical pressures, the minister added.
Beyond agriculture, the delegation discussed broader trade relations. Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Uruguay reached $112.5 million in 2025, marking a 70.7 percent year-on-year increase.
Both sides agreed to advance negotiations on the Indonesia-Mercosur Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Montevideo also reaffirmed its support for Indonesia’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Additionally, the two nations committed to leveraging their roles within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), where Indonesia is pursuing full membership and Uruguay holds partner country status.
Hartarto noted that the meeting underscores a mutual commitment to building on 60 years of diplomatic and economic relations.
