Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has requested that the UN and Lebanon ensure the investigation into the deaths of three TNI soldiers serving with the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon continues. Indonesia demands that the perpetrators responsible for the deaths of the three TNI soldiers be brought to trial.

“Foreign Minister Sugiono has held direct communications with the Lebanese Foreign Minister and the UN Secretary-General on 30 March 2026 to ensure that the investigation process is conducted promptly, transparently, and comprehensively, as well as providing full protection for the security and safety of UNIFIL personnel,” stated Acting Director for International Security and Peace (KPI) at Kemlu, Veronica Vicka Ancilla Rompis, during a press conference at the Ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

Vicka noted that the government has undertaken diplomatic efforts through Indonesia’s Permanent Representative in New York. She said Indonesia has also successfully pushed for an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council.

“Indonesia, together with France as the pen holder or issue lead for UNIFIL at the UN Security Council, has successfully advocated for the holding of an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council on 31 March and pushed for the adoption of a Security Council press statement condemning the attack on Indonesian personnel in UNIFIL,” she explained.

She stated that Indonesia has sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General. In the letter, Indonesia requested that the UN urge relevant authorities in the country concerned to prosecute the perpetrators responsible for the deaths of the three TNI soldiers serving with UNIFIL.

“The Indonesian government will request that the UN urge the relevant authorities to investigate, prosecute, and ensure full accountability for the perpetrators. These incidents are inseparable from the deteriorating situation in Lebanon,” she emphasised.

She said Indonesia continues to strongly condemn Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon. She noted that the Israeli attacks endanger UN forces tasked with maintaining peace.

“Indonesia continues to strongly condemn Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which have significantly increased the risks faced by UN peacekeeping personnel and weakened the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate as stipulated in UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” she said.

Vicka stated that the UN has held a meeting among troop-contributing countries to UNIFIL on 1 April. The meeting aimed to provide an overview of the security and operational situation of UNIFIL, the impact on personnel, the mandate, and to strengthen coordination among troop-contributing countries.

“At that meeting, Indonesia also expressed strong condemnation of attacks on UNIFIL personnel and facilities, which constitute a serious violation of international law, and affirmed that the escalation of conflict in southern Lebanon has increased risks to the safety of our troops,” she said.

Vicka emphasised that Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon will lead to an increasingly tense situation, including endangering peacekeeping personnel.

“Israel’s ongoing military operations in southern Lebanon, including statements regarding maintaining a presence in the area, risk further destabilising the situation and will continue to endanger peacekeeping personnel,” she explained.

“All actions that endanger peacekeeping personnel constitute serious violations of international law and must not be allowed to continue unchecked,” she added.
