She made the statement during an unannounced visit at Meta’s office in Jakarta on Wednesday. The inspection was conducted because Meta is considered to have failed to comply with Indonesian regulations.

“We spoke with Meta today to request several things, primarily transparency in their algorithms and content moderation,” she said following the visit.

Additionally, the company, which operates prominent social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, is required to fulfill reporting obligations in accordance with Indonesian law and to strengthen oversight of content circulating on its platforms.

According to the minister, the compliance level of Meta’s social media platforms with Indonesian regulations currently stands below 30 percent.

Hafid cited the significant amount of disinformation still circulating on social media, explaining that the most prevalent misinformation relates to health issues.

In addition, digital crimes such as online fraud or scams are reported to be increasingly rampant across various digital platforms.

The minister explained that these fraudulent practices not only target the middle class but also impact people with lower incomes.

Other frequently found disinformation relates to government issues and national development. Such content is considered to have the potential to pit the public against the government or trigger conflict between citizens.

Regarding the follow-up to this visit, Hafid stated that her ministry is still waiting for a compliance commitment from Meta.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has set a deadline for Meta to fulfill the obligations and requests presented by the government, though the minister did not disclose the specific timeframe provided.

With internet users reaching approximately 230 million in Indonesia, she called for collaborative and sustainable oversight efforts to keep the digital space safe and protect the public.
