The Indonesian government has strongly condemned the approval by Israel’s Knesset of a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian detainees. Indonesia asserts that the regulation contradicts the sense of justice.

“The Government of the Republic of Indonesia strongly condemns the approval by the Israeli Knesset of the law that imposes the death penalty on Palestinian detainees. This policy is unacceptable and wounds the sense of justice as well as universal humanitarian values,” states an official note from the X account of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as seen on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Indonesia states that the death penalty law for Palestinian detainees approved by the Israeli parliament constitutes a violation of human rights (HAM). Indonesia urges Israel to respect the right to a fair trial.

“The said law is a serious violation of human rights law and international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees the right to life and the right to a fair trial,” writes the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Indonesian government also urges Israel to repeal the law. Israel is asked to guarantee the right to life of Palestinian citizens who are currently detained in Israel.

“The Government of Indonesia urges Israel to immediately repeal the said law and halt all actions contrary to international law, as well as to ensure protection for the basic rights of the Palestinian people, including the detainees,” explains the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Indonesia also calls on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take firm steps to ensure accountability and protection for the Palestinian people. Indonesia reaffirms its full support for the Palestinian people’s struggle to achieve independence with East Jerusalem as its capital,” it continues.

As is known, the Israeli Parliament has approved a law that authorises the death penalty for Palestinian citizens proven to have murdered Israeli citizens. The approval of the bill marks a major victory for Israel’s right wing, which has strongly pushed for this measure.

Cited from Al Jazeera on Tuesday (31/3), Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to the chamber to vote ‘yes’ directly. The law makes death by hanging the standard punishment for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank who are proven to have committed murder.

The law also gives Israeli courts the authority to impose the death penalty or life imprisonment on its own citizens. This punishment is not retroactive and will only apply to future cases.
