Indonesia Urges Investigation into Attack on TNI Personnel in Lebanon
The Indonesian government has strongly condemned the Israeli attack on Indonesian peacekeeping personnel serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government has called for an immediate investigation into the incident that resulted in the deaths of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldiers.
“Indonesia calls for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation to uncover the facts,” stated the official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its X account @Kemlu_RI on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
The government is urging an explanation of the chronology of events based on an accountable investigation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also requests that all involved parties take responsibility for the attack incident.
The artillery attack resulted in three TNI soldiers being killed and five others injured. The first incident occurred in southern Lebanon on Sunday, 29 March 2026, which resulted in the death of Chief Soldier Farizal Rhomadhon. Then three other TNI soldiers were injured, namely Corporal Rico Pramudia, Corporal Bayu Prakoso, and Corporal Arif Kurniawan.
One day later, an explosion in southern Lebanon killed two TNI soldiers. They were Captain Inf Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant First Class Muhammad Nur Ichwan. Two other soldiers were injured, namely First Lieutenant Inf Sulthan Wirdean Maulana and Corporal Deni Rianto.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers the Israeli attacks at two different times as not to be viewed as separate incidents. The government stated that the attacks reflect the increasingly deteriorating security situation in southern Lebanon.
“Where Israel’s ongoing military operations have placed United Nations peacekeepers at very serious risk,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued that the safety and security of UN peacekeeping personnel cannot be compromised. “Any actions that endanger them constitute serious violations of international law and must not be left unaccounted for,” it stated.
In a separate statement, the Head of the TNI Headquarters Information Centre, Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah, said that the Escort Team of Company B of the Yonmek XXIII-S/UNIFIL Task Force was affected by the explosion incident. The team, which is part of the Scetor East Mobile Reserve, was escorting a Combat Support Service Unit convoy.
“The escort was in the context of providing support from the Eastern Sector UNIFIL Headquarters at United Nations Post 7-2,” said Aulia in his statement on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
The troops were originally moving towards the Yonmek TNI Konga XXIII-S/UNIFIL Task Force Headquarters at UNP 7-1. However, he said, due to the high escalation of conflict, the vehicle carrying several TNI soldiers was hit by artillery fire.
Aulia stated that the exact cause of the explosion incident in southern Lebanon is still being investigated by UNIFIL. “We are also continuously monitoring developments in the situation and preparing contingency measures in the face of dynamics in the Lebanon mission area,” he said.
