Jakarta - Indonesian Ambassador to Turkey Achmad Rizal Purnama has called on the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation to champion shared interests in the global climate agenda ahead of the UN climate conference, COP31, at the end of this year. “The D-8 must become a platform for Muslim-majority countries with large economies to fight for common interests at COP31,” Ambassador Rizal said in a written response in Jakarta on Friday. The call was made during his national statement at the D-8 environment ministerial meeting ahead of COP31, held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 16-17 July 2026. Rizal attended the meeting representing Indonesia’s Minister of Environment. By supporting Turkey’s presidency of COP31, Indonesia hopes the conference will produce tangible impacts based on previously reached agreements, particularly regarding climate action financing, he said. He argued that D-8 countries could become a driving force in this effort given their shared interests in global climate action. “This will serve as a bond for D-8 countries to jointly champion climate action, especially on financing for a just economic transition,” Ambassador Rizal said. He also expressed hope that the outcome of COP31 would deliver concrete and balanced progress on mitigation, adaptation, and support for developing countries through adequate funding, technology transfer, and social protection. The Indonesian Ambassador to Turkey also reminded developed countries of their obligation under Article 9 of the Paris Agreement to assist developing countries with their climate transition without adding to their debt burden or restricting their policy space. The Indonesian Embassy in Ankara noted that the meeting was intended as a forum for D-8 countries to strengthen coordination and build common positions on key issues in the COP31 negotiations. The meeting also produced the “Istanbul Declaration”, which reflects the D-8’s shared commitment to supporting a COP31 outcome that is balanced, inclusive, implementation-oriented, and supportive of sustainable development. COP31, the 31st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, will take place in Antalya, Turkey, from 9 to 20 November 2026.
