Indonesia is urging the continuation of talks between the United States and Iran to reach a peace agreement and end hostilities. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated that the negotiations represent a good start and must be continued, although Indonesia regrets that no agreement was reached in the talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, over the weekend. “Indonesia regrets that no agreement was reached in the negotiations between the US and Iran, despite the hard work done by Pakistan in facilitating the dialogue between the two parties. Nevertheless, Indonesia views the negotiations as an appropriate and very important initial step, which must be continued,” said Yvonne in Jakarta on Thursday. Indonesia also continues to urge all involved parties to exercise restraint to prevent the conflict’s impact from spreading to global stability and peace, Yvonne added. She further stated that Indonesia consistently encourages all parties to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the conflict. “Indonesia also reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting diplomatic efforts related to this conflict issue,” Yvonne said. The United States and Iran held the first round of negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached with Tehran regarding a two-week ceasefire. However, on Sunday morning (12/4), US Vice President J. D. Vance, who led the US delegation, stated that Iran and the US failed to reach an agreement in those negotiations, and the US delegation returned without results. Subsequently, Trump began blockading the Strait of Hormuz and instructed the US Navy to pursue and intercept ships paying to pass through the strait. Trump also said that the next round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran could take place again in Pakistan in the near future.
