Sugiono made the statement at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) in New Delhi, India, on Thursday (14 May 2026).

“Indonesia underlined that BRICS must be part of the solution, not polarisation,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted on Friday (15 May 2026).

Indonesia emphasised that BRICS should be able to lead the fair enforcement of international law without double standards.

At the forum, Indonesia also continued to express its full support for Palestine and the Two-State Solution.

On this occasion, Sugiono also mentioned the death of four Indonesian Peacekeepers serving in UNIFIL.

He also called for full accountability for those responsible.

“Indonesia affirms that the safety of UN peacekeeping personnel is a principle that must not be compromised,” he said.

Furthermore, the Indonesian Foreign Minister emphasised the importance of reforming global governance to address challenges such as reforming the world trade system to be inclusive, open and non-discriminatory, with the WTO as the main foundation.

“The greatest value of BRICS lies in strengthening the voice of developing countries in shaping the future global order,” Sugiono added.

For information, BRICS this year is held under the Indian presidency with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.

In 2026, Indonesia will be a member of BRICS for the second year.

In line with the theme of the Indian Presidency, Indonesia welcomes the strengthening of the New Development Bank (NDB) and affirms that it is completing internal processes to join.

In the future, Indonesia can utilise the BRICS forum to continue strengthening collaboration in a number of strategic sectors including economy, climate change, energy, health and reform of global governance.

“Indonesia’s membership in BRICS is expected to provide benefits and concrete cooperation for Indonesia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement continued.
