Indonesia Upgrades Delegation to Khamenei's Funeral After Protocol Clarification

Foreign Minister Sugiono has clarified Indonesia’s plans to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled for 9 July 2026. The government is now seeking to send a high-level delegation after initially planning to dispatch only the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran. Sugiono explained that the initial decision was based on urgent technical considerations, as the government was busy preparing for several state visits at home when the invitation was received. However, the situation changed after Iranian authorities confirmed that access to the main procession would be restricted to officials above the rank of ambassador. The confirmation was received on 2 July, prompting immediate coordination ahead of the Thursday ceremony. The planned official delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Sugiono alongside the Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly. The government is currently awaiting final details on the schedule and location from Iran to ensure the delegation can attend the appropriate proceedings.
