JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that Indonesia will still import 3.93 million tonnes of sugar throughout 2025.

This information was revealed by Deputy Head of BPS Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi during a working meeting with Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on sugar governance.

“In total, in 2025 we will import 3.93 million tonnes of the sugar commodity under Harmonized System Code 1701,” said Sonny at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

This production increase is driven by an expansion in the harvested sugarcane area from 521,000 hectares to 563,000 hectares, an 8.17% rise.

The additional harvested land is distributed across East Java, Central Java, Lampung, West Java, South Sumatra, and several other regions.

“Overall, our domestic supply is actually improving, but we still have a dependency on imports,” said Sonny.

At the same time, BPS recorded a decline in household sugar consumption to 1.46 million tonnes in 2025.

Additionally, the per capita consumption trend has also decreased to 5.15 kilograms per capita per year.

The public is also changing consumption patterns from raw food ingredients to processed foods.

“They are not buying sugar and salt directly but using processed foods produced by both industry and restaurants,” explained Sonny.
