The Ministry of Defence (Kemhan) of the Republic of Indonesia stated that Indonesia will receive the Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier as a gift from the Italian government. The aircraft carrier will focus on handling disasters.

“The Garibaldi is still in the process of being shipped. The difference is that the Garibaldi is a gift. Thus, it is a relationship between two countries, Government to Government (G to G) between Indonesia and Italy, which then sees that the Garibaldi can be given to the Indonesian government,” said the Head of Information Affairs of the Secretariat General of the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, to reporters in Central Jakarta, Wednesday (25/2/2026).

Rico said that further maintenance will be carried out. Rico said that this aircraft carrier will later be focused on military operations other than war.

“However, there is a connection with the costs of maintenance, repairs, and retrofitting. Because this ship is planned to be used for military operations other than war, especially disaster relief. Because it has a helideck, it can accommodate up to six helicopters, even more, on its deck,” he said.

He hopes that the use of this aircraft carrier will later facilitate disaster relief in the regions. He emphasized that the aircraft carrier will be used for humanitarian assistance.

“There is no intention from our nation, the Indonesian nation, to have an aircraft carrier like this with an aggressive nature, there is none. So there is no invasive nature. Once again, this will be used for humanitarian assistance, operational or military operations other than war,” he explained.
