Indonesia to Push for QRIS Interoperability Across BRICS Nations

A Special Staff member of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tri Tharyat, stated that the Indonesian government is encouraging cooperation regarding digital payment systems among BRICS nations. He noted that Indonesia possesses a flagship product, namely QRIS.

“Certainly, immediately following this summit, we will push for technical cooperation once again. We are also promoting interoperability within digital payment systems,” Tri said during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign and International Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Thursday (17/09/2026).

Tri mentioned that Indonesia has been in communication with India during the 2026 BRICS Summit. He noted that India also possesses its own digital payment system.

“I recently learned that there, QR codes are not necessary; instead, peer-to-peer transfers can be conducted using only mobile numbers, allowing transfers without the parties involved needing to hold a bank account,” he said.

He emphasised that Indonesia has a flagship product in QRIS and is pushing for its use across borders. “Therefore, I believe things like this could serve as a good example. However, as one of our flagship products, namely QRIS, we will promote international cooperation,” he added.

Tri noted that the BRICS Summit also includes various agendas discussing everything from business cooperation to digital payment systems.
