Indonesia will purchase India’s supersonic cruise missile system, BrahMos, according to Defence Ministry spokesman Rico Ricardo Sirait, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

“This BrahMos missile system procurement is to enhance Indonesia’s defence capability, particularly in protecting our maritime territory,” Sirait told the news outlet.

“This agreement is part of our military equipment modernisation and defence capability enhancement, especially in the maritime sector,” he added.

BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia established in 2023, headquartered in New Delhi. The missile system is available in land-based, air-based, ship-based, and submarine-based variants.

The agreement is described as “part of military hardware modernisation and defence capability enhancement, particularly in the maritime sector,” with the new system expected to “enhance deterrence capabilities in maintaining national sovereignty.”

Initial discussions between India and Indonesia regarding BrahMos have been reported to be valued between US$200 million and US$350 million (approximately IDR 3-5.25 trillion). However, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) cited a figure of US$450 million in December of last year.

Previously, the Philippines purchased BrahMos in 2022, having ordered the land-based anti-ship BrahMos missile system for nearly US$375 million that same year.

At the time of reporting, the Indian Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. BrahMos likewise declined to respond.
