Indonesia to probe doctor's death from suspected measles
Health Ministry spokesperson Aji Muhawarman said on Friday that the 26-year-old man reportedly experienced clinical symptoms including fever, a red rash, and severe shortness of breath.
“Based on preliminary findings, he had measles with pneumonia complications that worsened his condition,” Aji said.
He expressed condolences over the death, noting that measles can affect not only children but also adults.
Unvaccinated adults or those who have never contracted measles remain at high risk of severe complications, Aji added.
He said Cimacan Regional Hospital had provided standard medical care on March 26, but the patient later died despite maximum efforts.
“As a rapid response, the Cianjur Health Office, West Java Health Office, and the ministry will conduct an epidemiological investigation on March 27,” he said.
The team will trace close contacts, identify the source of transmission, conduct a risk assessment, and provide vitamin A to prevent further spread.
Aji urged the public to remain vigilant and complete immunization, as vaccination is the most effective protection against severe symptoms and death.
“The public should seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as high fever and a red rash,” he added.
People are also advised to maintain a clean and healthy lifestyle, including washing hands with soap, consuming nutritious food, and wearing masks when ill.
