Indonesia to meet USTR on 12 May to discuss continuation of US investigation

The Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Susiwijono Moegiarso, stated that the ministry will meet with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on 12 May 2026 to discuss the continuation of the US tariff investigation.

Susiwijono said that the meeting is a normal procedure that must be followed in the trade investigation process.

“They (USTR) are doing this as an online poke, then we’ll meet in person, I think on 12 May. But it’s actually more about the mechanism we have to go through. There’s no substantive issue. Indonesia has complied with everything,” he said when met at the Bisnis Indonesia Forum in Jakarta on Thursday.

Previously, the Indonesian government had prepared and submitted a written response to the investigation on 15 April 2026, complete with the supporting documents requested by the US side.

The investigation highlights two main issues: excess production capacity and allegations of forced labour practices in the supply chain.

Susiwijono assured that Indonesia has met various requested standards. The USTR has also acknowledged the completeness of the data provided by Indonesia.

“They (USTR) already know we’ve complied, the data is complete. It’s just confirmation with us,” he explained.

In this regard, the government will ensure that Indonesian exports to the US do not originate from production diversion practices from other countries (transhipment), for example from China, which could trigger excess capacity accusations.

Based on the latest developments, US President Donald Trump is still imposing a global tariff of 10 percent that applies for 150 days.
