Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni has announced that Indonesia will launch its Carbon Unit Registry System on 9 July 2026 as a foundation for strengthening transparency and certainty for business actors and investors. The launch will also be followed by the registration of a number of forestry sector carbon projects that have been internationally verified. On 6 July, the Ministry of Forestry will also facilitate the issuance of more than 30 million tonnes of CO2e carbon credits from the forestry sector. This moment will be an important milestone in the development of Indonesia’s carbon market. Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat emphasised that economic development and environmental protection must go hand in hand, not sacrifice one another. Ensuring that the direction of development policy maintains consistency between economic growth and environmental preservation is a priority. The transformation towards net-zero in Indonesia is projected to unlock economic opportunities worth USD 3.8 trillion by 2050. Electric vehicle usage grew by 14 per cent from January to August 2026, while the sustainable finance market surged twelvefold from USD 0.5 billion in 2015 to USD 6.3 billion in 2024. To strengthen the legal framework, the People’s Consultative Assembly is drafting Indonesia’s first Climate Change Bill, targeted for issuance by the end of 2026. OJK Board of Commissioners Chair Friderica Widyasari Dewi revealed that sustainable banking finance reached Rp2,114.6 trillion in 2025, growing 3.28 per cent annually, with the renewable energy and biodiversity conservation sectors recording the highest growth. OJK invites financial institutions and investors to jointly develop transition financing products and blended finance schemes that are aligned and supported by credible transition plans. In an effort to strengthen the private sector’s commitment, Kadin Indonesia signed a memorandum of understanding supporting RE100, a global initiative encouraging companies to meet all their electricity needs from renewable energy by 2050. The signing was witnessed by the Environment Minister, OJK Chair, MPR Deputy Speaker, and DPR Commission XII Deputy Chair. Steven Marcelino, Deputy Chair of the UK Bilateral Committee at Kadin Indonesia, welcomed the move, stating that the world’s most influential companies are now committed to meeting 100 per cent of their electricity needs from renewable energy by 2050 and expressing hope that more Indonesian companies can accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and electrification to strengthen national energy security.
