Speaking in Kendari on Monday, TNI AU Chief of Staff Air Chief Marshal M. Tonny Harjono said the squadron would be based at Haluoleo Air Base.

“We chose Southeast Sulawesi for its strategic geographic value to the Air Force, as the region serves as a gateway to eastern Indonesia,” he told reporters after attending an aerospace event.

Harjono said the plan remains in the preparatory stage, with discussions ongoing on key aspects, including aircraft specifications.

In addition to deploying advanced fighter jets, he said TNI AU aims to strengthen the posture of its Rapid Action Forces Command, known as Kopasgat, and increase the number of personnel stationed in the province.

He added that the Air Force is committed to enhancing its regional capabilities while creating job opportunities for local communities. Local candidates will be prioritized in recruitment and may be assigned to serve in their home regions.

“Our mission is to expand combat units, increase personnel, and enable local residents to actively contribute to national defense through the Air Force,” he said.

Southeast Sulawesi Governor Andi Sumangerukka expressed support for the initiative, saying that strengthening Haluoleo Air Base with a new squadron could also improve regional connectivity.

He said the plan aligns with efforts to upgrade Haluoleo Airport, which shares facilities with the air base, into an international airport.

“The development is expected to open Southeast Sulawesi to broader international access, both in terms of defense and transportation,” he said.

The governor added that the plan reflects the central government’s confidence in the province’s potential.
