Indonesia to Build Factory Producing 300,000 Tonnes of Copper and 5 Million Gold Pieces
Indonesia’s mining holding MIND ID, through PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), is synergising with the defence industry holding DEFEND ID to optimise copper for producing brass mill and brass cup in Gresik with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year. This synergy supports the mining sector’s contribution to Indonesia’s defence industry, which requires strengthening the supply chain for ammunition components. MIND ID will further develop copper rod and wire production facilities with a capacity of up to 300,000 tonnes per annum, as well as copper pipes with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum. This follows up on optimising copper cathode from Freeport Indonesia’s production to meet the ongoing needs of Indonesia’s manufacturing industry. In the gold downstream line, MIND ID is pushing to increase precious metal production capacity. This project will optimise gold bar production from Freeport Indonesia’s precious metal refinery, utilising anode slime from the copper refining process as raw material. The facility to be built by ANTAM has a capacity of up to 30 tonnes per year or 5 million pieces per year, to meet the precious metal investment needs of the Indonesian people. All these facilities will be built in the JIIPE Gresik area, East Java, with multimodal land and sea connectivity, integrated logistics, and unified permitting services in synergy with PELINDO. During the Groundbreaking of Integrated Copper and Gold Downstreaming in the JIIPE Gresik area, President Prabowo Subianto stated virtually that amid increasingly intense international geopolitical competition, more countries want to dominate natural resource wealth. Through this strategic downstreaming step, Indonesia seeks to master its natural wealth and utilise it for the nation’s interests, which is the path to Indonesia’s resurgence. “We must be bold and capable of mastering natural resource wealth. This is a form of the nation’s courage to control and process it in our own country. Downstreaming is the only way for us to become more prosperous,” he said in his speech at the Groundbreaking of 13 National Downstreaming Projects Phase 2 in Cilacap, Central Java, quoted on Thursday (30/4/2026). In his speech, MIND ID’s Director of Downstreaming Strategy and Mineral Ecosystem, Tedy Badrujaman, stated that this initiative from the MIND ID Group aligns with the government’s mandate and is based on President Asta Cita, namely continuing downstreaming and industrialisation. Through the development of these integrated manufacturing facilities, Indonesia will have a stronger domestic copper and gold supply chain to further increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the economy. “This strategic step is part of the larger Danantara Downstreaming Project series, a programme that not only builds production capacity but strengthens the foundation of the national strategic industry comprehensively, from upstream to downstream, from raw materials to finished products needed by the nation,” he said.
