Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has announced that Indonesia will begin using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in its aviation sector starting in 2027, as part of a transformation towards low-emission air transport. “So, in 2027, the spirit is that we will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), meaning this is an alternative to conventional avtur and it is much cleaner,” AHY said during the opening of a ministerial-level coordination meeting on strengthening airport ecosystem governance in Jakarta on Thursday. The government is preparing the transformation of the aviation sector to low emissions through the implementation of SAF starting in 2027. AHY stated that this transformation is a crucial part of the government’s efforts to maintain a balance between national economic growth and its commitment to environmental preservation and reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector. Therefore, the government is preparing various decarbonisation measures for the aviation sector, including reducing energy consumption, converting energy sources, and improving the efficiency of national resource utilisation. AHY explained that these decarbonisation efforts will also be part of strengthening the airport ecosystem, ensuring that the development of the air transport sector aligns with the national sustainable development agenda.
