Speaking at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum in Jakarta on Tuesday, Presidential Special Envoy for Climate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo revealed that the nuclear milestone has been formally integrated into the country’s national energy master plan following consultations with state utility firm PT PLN.

“Indonesia is set to launch a highly ambitious nuclear development program. The latest I heard from Mr. Darmawan (President Director of PT PLN) is that a 7 GW target has been included in the national energy master plan,” Hashim announced.

The nuclear program will complement a 100 gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power development target to ensure long-term energy sustainability and support public services across the country.

“The government must provide electricity and energy for its people—so they can light their homes, so children can study at night, and so hospitals and clinics in remote areas have power when they need it,” he noted.

To meet these targets, the government plans to finalize the geographical site selection for the nuclear facilities by 2026 or 2027 at the latest.

Elen Setiadi, Deputy for Energy and Mineral Resources Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, stated that site selection will depend on the specific technology selected.

Indonesia is currently evaluating partnership proposals from major international nuclear leaders, including technology providers from the United States, South Korea, Japan, and Russia.

Elen emphasized that nuclear energy will provide reliable, competitive, and sustainable power to drive industrialization as national electricity demand is projected to reach 600 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2030, with per capita consumption approaching 2,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh).
