Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening migrant worker protections through full support for the Progress Declaration from the UN’s 2026 International Migration Review Forum, held in New York from 4 to 8 May.

Rinardi, Director General of Protection at the Ministry of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), stated in a release received in Jakarta on Sunday that the rights and dignity of migrant workers must be at the centre of global migration governance.

The Progress Declaration is a document adopted by the United Nations (UN) as a reference for global migration governance for the 2026-2030 period, focusing on enhancing cooperation for safe, orderly, and regular migration.

“Indonesia fully supports the Progress Declaration without reservation,” said Rinardi while attending the Plenary Session of the 2026 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) in New York, United States, on Friday (8/5).

First, all UN member states provided full support for the Progress Declaration without exception.

Second, it recognises that each country has different migration realities, thus requiring respectful and equal approaches.

Third, it adapts the importance of maintaining a spirit of cooperation between countries of origin, transit, and destination.

“Differences in migration realities between countries actually strengthen the urgency of equal dialogue and cooperation in global migration governance,” explained Rinardi.

“Cooperation between countries of origin, transit, and destination must continue to be strengthened, because migration can only be managed effectively through real collaboration and partnerships,” he said.

Rinardi emphasised that the Indonesian Government is fully committed to implementing the Progress Declaration to strengthen protection for more than five million Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in various countries.

“Indonesia will continue to promote the implementation of this declaration as part of efforts to comprehensively strengthen the protection of Indonesian migrant workers,” he said.

The Indonesian delegation, led by Rinardi, was accompanied by Special Staff to the Foreign Minister Tri Haryati, Deputy Minister for Community Empowerment Leontinus Alpha, and Director of Human Rights and Migration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) Indah Nuria Savitri.

The Indonesian Government has also reaffirmed its full commitment to implementing the declaration to strengthen the protection of Indonesian migrant workers worldwide.
