Indonesia stunned by India 3-0 in Fed Cup

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Indonesia was beaten 0-3 by India in a Group Three tie at the Asia-Pacific Junior Fed Cup in the Bung Karno tennis hall on Wednesday.

While India, which has won twice, is already guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals, Indonesia will have to defeat the Philippines in the final group matches to go through.

The hosting team's faltering run on the second day of the competition began when Septi Nindya Yutami failed to overcome Ankita Bhambri.

After losing in the opening set, the Indonesian teenager pulled back to even, but she was completely outgunned in the closing set for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 loss.

Sandy Gumulya did not seem to have recovered her fitness from the opening day when she had cramps at the end of her match. On Wednesday, she scored only four games in her 6-1, 6-3 defeat by Sania Mirza.

India followed on with a clean sweep after Ankira Bhambri/Sania Mirza overcame Sandy Gumulya/Septi Nindya Yutami, 6-3, 7-5, Antara reported.

The host is now braced for a must-win match against the Philippines, which have already been eliminated from the competition after conceding two losses.

After a 0-3 drubbing by India on the opening day, the Philippines' dismal campaign continued with a loss to Uzbekistan with the same score.

Uzbekistan will now be entering the group's final match against India with a 1-1 record.

Chinese Taipei also secured a next stage berth after winning its second match against second seed China 2-1 in Group Four. It had previously beat New Zealand 3-0 before.

The Chinese and New Zealanders will be fighting for the other place from the group.

Group Two saw Thailand and South Korea through, each with two wins, while Group One has top seed Australia and Malaysia in the next stage.

The eight teams in the quarterfinals will be paired with the winning four going to the International Fed Cup in France in October.
