JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has strongly condemned the death of an Indonesian soldier serving with UNIFIL, Corporal Rico Pramudia, due to an attack in southern Lebanon at the end of March 2026. Corporal Rico (31) was reported to have passed away after being treated for nearly a month in a hospital in Beirut. “Indonesia once again strongly condemns the Israeli attack that caused the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper,” Kemlu stated on its X account, @Kemlu_RI, on Friday (24/4/2026). Since the incident, Kemlu has emphasised that the government is continuously coordinating closely and intensively with UNIFIL. Kemlu, together with the Lebanese government and medical teams in Beirut, has ensured that medical treatment was carried out quickly and optimally. “Various best medical measures have been taken, but due to the severe injuries sustained, the deceased’s life could not be saved,” it said. “The government continues to coordinate with UNIFIL to ensure that the repatriation of the remains can be carried out promptly and with full respect,” it added. Indonesia asserts that attacks on peacekeeping personnel constitute a serious violation of international law and can be categorised as war crimes. To date, Indonesia continues to urge the UN to conduct a comprehensive, transparent, and accountable investigation to uncover the facts and ensure accountability for this incident. For Indonesia, the safety and security of UN peacekeepers is non-negotiable. “The government is also continuously coordinating with the UN and troop-contributing countries to strengthen protection for all personnel in the field, including through a comprehensive evaluation of safety and security aspects and the reinforcement of risk mitigation measures in the UNIFIL area of operations,” it stressed. The UN force has expressed deep condolences to the family and colleagues of Corporal Rico.
