“Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is a virtue,” wrote philosopher Baruch Spinoza.

The Indonesian government has expressed deep sorrow and anger over an attack targeting Indonesian peacekeeping forces in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon. This firm statement was delivered by Indonesia’s Ambassador to the UN, Umar Hadi, at an emergency session of the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday (31/3).

The emergency session was convened at the urging of Indonesia and France in response to the escalating conflict that increasingly endangers humanitarian personnel.

Indonesia strongly condemns the series of attacks that occurred on 29 and 30 March 2026. These incidents resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian soldiers: Captain Inf Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Sergeant Major Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon, who was due to return home in May.

Indonesia assesses that the repeated Israeli military attacks violating Lebanese sovereignty are the root of this escalation.

The government asserts that such actions threaten global peace and can be categorised as war crimes under international law.

In this regard, Indonesia demands an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation by an independent party.

“Let me make it clear, we demand a direct investigation by the United Nations, not just excuses from Israel,” Umar Hadi stated emphatically on Wednesday (1/4).

In addition to demanding legal accountability for the perpetrators, Indonesia urges three main points to the UN Security Council: an immediate cessation of hostilities, enhanced protection for peacekeeping operations, and renewed commitment to Resolution 1701.

Indonesia concluded its statement by urging the UN Security Council to unite and take a firm stance in condemning attacks on peacekeepers, to ensure the safety of personnel becomes the top priority in conflict zones.

The UN has declared the attacks on UNIFIL in Lebanon a violation of Resolution 1701.
