Indonesia Strengthens Collaboration, Aims for Malaria-Free Status by 2030
Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Ministry of Health continues to strengthen its commitment towards a Malaria-Free Indonesia by 2030 through cross-sector collaboration, reinforced prevention efforts at the regional level, and regional leadership, which is regarded as key to achieving the target.
Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono said in Jakarta on Wednesday that malaria remains a public health challenge both globally and nationally.
As of July 2026, Indonesia had recorded 346,866 malaria cases, whilst globally in 2024 there were 282 million cases with 610,000 deaths.
“That is why the government continues to strengthen the implementation of the 2025–2045 Malaria Elimination Roadmap through various interventions, starting with the Find, Treat, and Control Programme (TOKEN), Mass Drug Administration (MDA), Targeted Drug Administration (TDA), and Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPTf) for at-risk groups,” said Deputy Minister Dante.
At the peak of the 2026 World Malaria Day commemoration, Deputy Minister Dante presented malaria elimination certificates to two provinces and seven regencies as a form of appreciation for the regions’ success in interrupting malaria transmission, whilst also encouraging accelerated elimination across Indonesia.
“Maintain the regions that have achieved elimination, accelerate those that have not, and together let us realise a Malaria-Free Indonesia by 2030,” said the Deputy Minister.
On the same occasion, Acting Director-General of Disease Control at the Ministry of Health, Andi Saguni, reported that as of July 2026 Indonesia had recorded 346,866 malaria cases. On the other hand, 414 regencies and cities, or approximately 94.1 per cent of the 2026 target for regencies and cities, have achieved malaria elimination status.
As part of the culmination of the 2026 World Malaria Day commemoration, the Ministry of Health presented malaria elimination certificates to South Sumatra, the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), as well as seven regencies: Langkat, Mentawai Islands, South Central Timor, Central Sumba, Purworejo, North Halmahera, and Bintan.
On behalf of the regional heads receiving the malaria elimination certificates, Regent of Central Sumba Paulus Limu delivered the Commitment to Sustaining Malaria-Eliminated Regions.
“We declare our commitment wholeheartedly and sincerely to mobilise all stakeholders to maintain malaria elimination in the regencies and provinces that are our working areas,” said Paulus.
