Indonesia still trailing in junior world bridge c'ships

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has not yet succeeded in lifting itself out of the last position at the 5th World Junior Bridge Team Championship at Kuta, Bali. It lost 5-25 to the US-1 team in the third session on Monday.

In the first and second sessions the Indonesian team was defeated 1-25 by Denmark and 0-25 by Australia.

England, undefeated in the first three sessions, now takes the lead with 66 VP after three wins over Denmark 20-10, US-2 24-6, and Argentina 22-8. New Zealand is second with 63 VP and Canada third with 56 VP. Two other teams representing Zone VI, China and Japan, were placed in the fifth and eighth positions, each with 47 and 43 VP.

The Indonesian team, also representing Zone VI during the first half of the third session, was represented in the open room by the pair of Taufik Nasution/Agus Kus Triyanto who played against Eric Graco/Kevin Wilson, while in the closed room, Jimmy Boyoh/Jems Polii took on Steven Altus/Andrew Mose. At half-time during the second session, Indonesia substituted Taufik/Agus with John Tumewu/Ananta Dapu. The change was of no avail.

In the three sessions already played, Indonesia gained only six VP, forcing Jimmy Boyoh and partners to do their utmost to enter the semifinals. The host team must have clear victories in the next eight sessions, Antara reported yesterday.

In the fourth session on Monday night Indonesia played Canada. At half-time Indonesia was already lagging with 21-67 IMP.

National event

Meanwhile in the national championship event, the North Sulawesi team of Hengky Lasut/Eddy Manopo, Max Tompodung/Jefry Moningke and Octa Wohon/Tommy Rogi, came out the winner as expected.

In the final round the North Sulawesi team defeated Jakarta 95-87.

The Jakarta team was represented by Bert Toar Polii/Munawar Sawirudin, Deny Sakul/Ferdy Waluyan and Hasyim Arief/Noldy George.

Jakarta started well with a win of 29-13 IMP in the first round, but North Sulawesi won with 12-11 and 54-15 in the second and third rounds. Jakarta's win of 32-16 in the fourth round was not enough to win the match.

Yogyakarta came third after beating East Java 132-92.

Twenty provinces participated in the foursome championship. The seven provinces absent were Aceh, Bengkulu, Jambi, Central Kalimantan, Maluku, Southeast Sulawesi and South Sulawesi.
