Indonesia Steps Up Garlic Production, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Shows Evidence
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Deputy Minister of Agriculture (Wamentan) Sudaryono revealed that there is a priority to increase the production of the national garlic commodity to pursue self-sufficiency, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive. Sudaryono acknowledged that this directive is strategic given findings of a decline in garlic production.
‘The garlic is stabilising in accordance with the President’s instructions; it is a matter of concern and we have been asked to raise its productivity,’ Sudaryono said at a working meeting (raker) with Commission IV of the DPR RI, on Tuesday (19 May 2026).
Sudaryono added that the increase in garlic production will be prioritised through several measures. One of them is planting garlic seed in Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) and in Central Java.
‘This year we have planted garlic seed in Sembalun, NTB, and in Temanggung and Wonosobo, Central Java; we have carried out garlic planting for seed purposes,’ he continued.
Nevertheless, he said, they require mass procurement of garlic seed, which would be arranged through cooperation with China.
‘We can also arrange this; we will cooperate by taking or sourcing seeds from China, which are more advanced in relation to garlic seeds, but we must still adjust to the climate and soil conditions in Indonesia as well. 455 hectares have been planted for seed production,’ Sudaryono explained.
