Indonesia slashes 191 sports rules into four for efficiency
Addressing the press after a meeting with Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas in Jakarta on Friday, Sports Minister Erick Thohir explained that the four simplified regulations primarily cover youth development, sports promotion, sports achievements, the sports industry, and sports tourism.
The four provisions took effect after being signed by Thohir and promulgated by the Directorate General of Legislation at the Ministry of Law.
He said that the deregulation move had reduced the number of regulatory articles by 60 percent, from about 1,500 to around 600, with those on sports achievements alone cut from roughly 700 to only 200.
Elaborating further, Thohir noted that the initiative followed an evaluation of the ministry’s regulatory framework, which led to consultations with the Ministry of Law on effective ways to streamline rules.
“We received remarkable assistance from the minister of law. I believe our case shows that other ministries can request similar guidance to address issues in this matter,” he said, highlighting that the Ministry of Law enabled successful and timely deregulation within his institution.
The law minister, he continued, also suggested that the Ministry of Youth and Sports intensify coordination with other institutions to avoid program or policy overlaps.
“We will implement the advice and pursue further talks with the Ministry of Law,” the minister added.
He also revealed a newly signed agreement with Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti, with yet another planned with Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto.
