Indonesia-Singapore Collaboration Strengthens Low-Carbon Opportunities in Barelang
A strategic collaboration between Indonesia and Singapore is seen as opening new opportunities for the development of a green economy and low-carbon zones in the Riau Islands, particularly the Barelang region, which is a vital part of the Batam area.
This strengthening of collaboration emerged during a meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. During the meeting, both nations reinforced cooperation across various strategic sectors, ranging from renewable energy and sustainable industrial zones to the development of a low-carbon economy.
“One promising new area is the green economy. We know that climate change will have a greater impact on small island nations and archipelagic nations like ours. However, we can transform that vulnerability into an opportunity,” stated Lawrence Wong, as reported on Tuesday (7/7/2026).
He also noted that the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun (BBK) region continues to grow as a digital economic hub capable of attracting investor interest. According to him, this potential is further bolstered through cooperation in the energy and sustainable industry sectors.
During the meeting, energy ministers from both countries signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) covering cross-border electricity trade, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and the development of sustainable industrial zones.
Additionally, both nations noted progress within six bilateral economic working groups, which include the development of special economic zones, agriculture, tourism, labour, and transportation.
President Prabowo also welcomed the collaboration between Temasek and Danantara, which is aimed at supporting investment, including in the renewable energy sector and low-carbon economic development.
The direction of this cooperation is viewed as a positive signal for the Riau Islands as a strategic region playing a crucial role in the development of investment, industry, trade, services, and sustainable economic growth.
In line with the development of the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun regions, Barelang is also seen as having significant opportunities to benefit from this cooperation. The development of renewable energy, cross-border electricity trade, carbon capture and storage, and sustainable industrial zones is expected to strengthen the green economy ecosystem in the area.
The Indonesia-Singapore collaboration also has the potential to create a multiplier effect through increased investment, strategic infrastructure development, job creation, and the growth of various supporting economic sectors in the region.
Given its potential, Barelang is expected to play a larger role in supporting the development of a low-carbon economy while strengthening the position of the Riau Islands as a strategic region within the Indonesia-Singapore green economy cooperation.
