Indonesia Shaken by Three Earthquakes in a Single Day

Indonesia recorded three earthquakes in a single day on Saturday, 15 August 2026. The three quakes occurred in different regions with significant magnitudes.

The first earthquake struck around 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday morning at 04.58 WIB with a magnitude of 7.7.

Following the quake, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami early warning for several areas, particularly East Nusa Tenggara and the Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi.

The tsunami early warning was later declared over, but BMKG reported increased wave heights affecting several coastal areas.

The second earthquake struck Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra, on Saturday afternoon at 17.54 WIB with a magnitude of 6.4.

According to BMKG, the epicentre was located at 2.97 degrees North latitude and 98.95 degrees East longitude at a depth of 163 kilometres. The quake’s centre was on land and had no tsunami potential.

The third earthquake struck Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday night at 23.25 WIB with a magnitude exceeding 6.2.

The quake’s coordinates were 0.25 degrees North latitude and 120.22 degrees East longitude, precisely 82 kilometres southwest of Parigi Moutong.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 44 kilometres. There was no tsunami potential from this quake.
