The Indonesian government has requested a guarantee from the Cypriot government regarding the fate of Abdul Karim Read Miqdad, ensuring he is not handed over to the Zionist occupation authorities of Israel. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, conveyed this after meeting with Cypriot Ambassador HE Nicholas Panayiotou in Jakarta on Wednesday (22/7/2026). Yusril emphasised that handing Miqdad over to a third country’s authorities would contravene Interpol’s statutes. “I have requested direct confirmation from the Cypriot government. They have guaranteed that the person concerned will not be handed over to any third country, including Israel, as this would violate the applicable Interpol mechanisms,” Yusril stated. He explained that Miqdad was known in Indonesia as a Palestinian national. The Cypriot government requested his deportation through a non-extradition route after Interpol issued a red notice against him on 16 July 2026. Yusril clarified that Miqdad is a suspect in a criminal case within Cyprus’s jurisdiction, and the Cypriot police had sufficient preliminary evidence. Since Indonesia and Cyprus lack an extradition treaty, the deportation was carried out based on the official request from the Cypriot government following the Interpol red notice.
