The Indonesian government has positively welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the United States (US) and Iran announced in the past two weeks. This agreement is seen as an initial signal for opening space for diplomacy to ease tensions in the region.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Yvonne Mewengkang. She said that this development reflects efforts by the parties to promote de-escalation of the conflict.

“Regarding this ceasefire agreement, the Indonesian Government certainly welcomes it. This development reflects efforts by the parties to keep open space for diplomacy in order to promote de-escalation,” Yvonne said during a press conference on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

Indonesia views this momentum as a positive initial step towards a more sustainable peaceful resolution. The government urges all relevant parties to optimally utilise this opportunity.

Furthermore, Indonesia emphasises the importance of restraint and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each country. According to Yvonne, dialogue and diplomacy must be the top priority in resolving conflicts.

“Dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve conflicts,” she asserted.

In addition, Indonesia also reminds of the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, including provisions in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The government assures that it will continue to support various constructive diplomatic efforts, including steps towards a permanent resolution while prioritising the protection of civilians as the main priority.
